Women Over 40 Should Not Wear Long Hair

By

What do Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Anniston and Mary-Louise Parker have in common?

Every proper woman knows the rule: "no long hair styles after 4o." These days, however, propriety seems to be taking a back seat to vanity, particularly in the Hollywood set. Just take a look at Jennifer Lopez or Jennifer Aniston who are both 42, touting luxurious locks and daring hemlines at their age. Indeed! Did nobody tell them to just get old? What is this world coming to?

Long hair is for women in the flower of their youth. Long hair is beautiful, sexy and feminine and we all know you just can't be sexy or beautiful once past your prime. Ladies, it is time to accept that your autumnal years are upon you and just go gracefully. You can start by cutting those suggestive strands and donning more comely attire.

If she had any sense of propriety at all, Jennifer Lopez would remember her age and just stop looking so gorgeous. She would immediately change her hair style to something more befitting a mature woman in her 40s. Might I suggest a nice matronly bun if she just can't bring herself to cut her hair short.

Does Jennifer Lopez think that this is sexy?

Clearly, there is nothing sexy about 42 year old Jennifer Lopez with ultra long hair.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is no better. Here she is in her early 40s and still running around looking like a million bucks. The nerve. She should be getting fat and wrinkly by now and, for Pete's sake, enough with the splendorous hair already. Haven't you been in the great-hair limelight long enough Jennifer? Girlfriend , it is time for you to step down, pass the torch to the younger generations and join the ranks of the old and has-been.

Mary-Louise Parker from 'Weeds'

Mary-Louise Parker from Weeds is 47 years old...yes, you read that right, 47! This is ridiculous Mary-Louise, look at you. Why, you don't look a day over 30. Disgraceful. Just look at this brunette beauty refusing to embrace marmishness like a good 47 year old should.

Wearing her long hair in face framing waves is flattering and sexy. Combine that with a fabulous figure and confident poise, and Mary-Louise retains her girlish sensuality well into her advanced years. It is a shame that such a lovely woman should flaunt her aged self so indecently.

Shame on Salma Hayek for not cropping her tresses by age 45!
Shame on Salma Hayek for not cropping her tresses by age 45!

Salma Hayek

I actually met Salma Hayek back in the 90s when she was in her prime. She was, in fact, the most radiantly beautiful person I had ever seen in real life. She actually had an aura around her that made her appear unearthly. Unfortunately, Salma is yet another example of a woman in her mid 40s who has not the decency to look her age.

Salma wears her glossy, dark hair well past her shoulders at 45 years old. She looks beautiful, sexy and everything that a woman her age simply should not.

When it comes to Iman, I'm just confused. I think this current (2011) photo is actually picturing a much younger impostor. Perhaps Iman has a daughter masquerading as her mother. There is just no way such long, straight hair could look that fantastic on a 56 year old. Everyone knows that long hair is aging and unattractive on the "overly ripe." Quite impossible.

Elizabeth Hurley

Everyone says that yours truly looks just like Elizabeth Hurley. Well, OK, no one actually said that but Elizabeth and I are about the same age with similar hair styles. Actually, mine is a little longer.

Did I say that over-40-year-olds should not wear long hair? Oops, here's what I meant: as long as your hair is healthy and flattering to the shape of your face, why not wear it long at any age? I believe that the "rule" is referring to those with thin, scraggly, long hair that is not attractively styled which, of course, does not apply to any of us.

Good Show, Bravo!!

Just Ask Susan 10 months ago

So glad that you put in that last paragraph as my hair is a little longer than Jennifer Aniston and I am over 50. I have wanted to go shorter but every time I even mention it my husband throws a fit.

Pamela N Red 10 months ago

That is a silly rule written by women who prefer short hair. All of those women look great with their long hair and should keep it. I'm over 40 and have long hair and have no intentions of cutting mine.

Sally's Trove 10 months ago

Nice tongue-in-cheek! Interestingly, I just cut my hair a few weeks ago (it was long enough to sit on) and am SOOOOO glad I did. I feel like a new person. And that's sayin' a lot when you're my age. :p Good riddance to it!

marellen 10 months ago

Wonderful job...I agree, if you keep yourselve in shape and wear make up and your hair is healthy, then it doesnt matter what the length of hair or age is...

AliciaC 10 months ago

Thanks for an entertaining hub. There shouldn’t be any hair rules! People should wear their hair in a style that makes them feel good - after all, it’s their hair. I’m over forty and have long hair, and I don’t plan on getting it cut short any time soon.

Sally's Trove 10 months ago

LOLOL, Bella...a "teat"! This Hub just gets better and better.

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

Heehee, thanks...I'm glad you all enjoyed my little joke.

DzyMsLizzy 10 months ago

Rules, schmoolz! I wear my hair for my own comfort, and always have, since I was a kid. I prefer a no-fuss, no muss, no set, no perm, no blow-dry "pixie-shag" cut.

Comfort first, last and in the middle for me. Anyone who does not like the way I look is welcome to look the other way!

The "fashionistas" can go jump in the lake. I don't do fashion--I do what pleases ME--after all, we are each responsible for our own happiness, and how can we be happy if we are kow-towing to some fashion "rule," thereby taking on someone ELSE'S idea of beauty/style, instead of just being ourselves!!??

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

Right you are Ms Lizzy!

JT Walters 10 months ago

Is it me or has Liz Hurley put weight on? And it seems the ages on these celebrities are wrong. I have all of them about 5 years older than what is written here but I really don't keep up with celebrities.

Great Hub!!

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

It's you...Liz looks perfect. And I am never defensive or bias in any way:):);)

I did look up the year they were born...(shrugs.)

drkathleenfuller 10 months ago

Great hub- I don't wear my hair long because it has always been thin. However, I am 64 and I photograph well. My profile photo was taken last year. I give credit to my genes.

Karlie Philpott 10 months ago

You had me going there a minute. I hope and pray I look that good in my 40's and my long hair is here to stay.

kashmir56 10 months ago

Hi Mrs. Menagerie, great hub, I guess if they are happy with the way they look that is the important thing, not what someone else thinks .

Charlu 10 months ago

Hysterical and I think if I looked that good I'd be flaunting it to. Just watched Hot in Cleveland which is right up the same alley and just as funny for the "over 40 (well maybe 50)" club. Awesome hub and voted all the ups. Thanks for making my day.

I gotta say in the beginning I was getting a little worried about the length of my hair. Since I quit coloring it I let it grow and refer to the gray as costly highlights lol

DoItForHer 10 months ago

I don't see any dudes! But to be honest, we probably have a harder time holding onto our think, full head of hair when compared to the fairer sex. Fabio, however, is about 50 and he has a mane of hair that rivals most anyone.

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

DrKathleen--you look fantastic!

Karlie--heeheehee...glad I had you going at first, you must have thought I was nuts!!!

Tom, you certainly have a point there (I hope you know I'm kiddin'...these women are gorgeous!!!!)

Thanks Charlu...I had a lot of fun writing this hub:)

Hi DoItForHer...I really should add a photo of Fabio at the end of this hub, that'd be awesome. :)

Angie Jardine 10 months ago

Hi MrsM ... I wondered if you were blind or bitchy (I know, as if you would, sorry) at first ... then I realised you were kidding!

Of course these women are absolutely gorgeous and I defend their right to wear their hair down to their boots if that's what they want. (Was a radical feminist - old habits die hard).

But ... I think you'll notice they are all celebs ... so looking good is their job ... and I think they may be well able to afford to have a teensy-weensy bit of help with how they look. Perhaps a little more than the rest of us mere mortals?

Clever hub, Mrs!

thougtforce 10 months ago

You really got me there for a moment and I couldn't understand why you didn't see that they looked beautiful in their long hair. But to have long hair when you are a bit older does need both care and maybe a bit of other things too. Great hub with an interesting twist!

Lovely hub, I am only 32, but I have already told my wife the day she comes home with hair cut around the jaw line is the day I file for divorce...

very cute piece, I hope ladies continue to defy hair tradition. Cheers.

Thanks Jason :)

Becky 10 months ago

I am 55 and my hair is past my waist. I am not cutting it off. I keep it colored and clean. It keeps itself thick, curly, and gorgeous. It is my crowning glory. Maybe the only one I have left. No, I don't look like either of the Jennifer's. Teenagers(my children)are still jealous of it. My 14 year old wants my hair. Hers is just wavy.

Jean Bakula 10 months ago

A really fun hub! In all fairness though, many of these women have had lots of botex and plastic surgery, as they don't live like "regular" people. And many are shaving about 5 or 10 yrs off their ages, since they are enhanced to look younger, and people have short memories. I say go for it, if you look good, fake or real.

Simone Smith 10 months ago

Brilliant Hub, Mrs. Menagerie. But women over 40 should STOP LOOKING SO GORGEOUS! Poor 20-somethings like me ain't got a chance! ;_;

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

Hi Becky! Keep that fabulous hair as long as you want to!

Jean, me too, good for them!

Hey Simone, I hoped you would stop by!

jansplace 10 months ago

Hi,

I love your article very interesting and informative. You have put a lot of work into it.

I had to laugh at the rule women over 40 should cut their locks. I'm 60 this week and my auburn hair is shoulder length!

My youngest son said to me a few weeks ago, in his exact words, "You need to get the hair cut love and dye it blonde or something." My reply was, "Absolutely not - when I'm ready." We had a laugh because he knows I've always rebelled 'against the rules."

You have some very good advice and I love the photo's.

Have a lovely day.

jansplace 10 months ago

Hi again,

In your last paragraph I have to agree with you long unkept hair looks awful. Yep, if your hair is in good condition, - keep it long!

Sunglow 10 months ago

The 50's are the new 30's. That rule does not apply any more. I think it is all about preference. Those women look great with long hair after 40. In addition, I am 51 and I love my long tress, however, I change up to a short wigs when it is in my spirit. Bottom line -- "to each his own". Let it go -- people are doing whatever they want these days anyway.

Mrs. Menagerie 10 months ago

@Mrs. Menagerie...This is very entertaining with great pictures that demonstrate once and for all why no one over 40 should wear their hair long!! LOL!

Mrs. Menagerie 8 months ago

Hi Eileen...maybe she secretly wishes she had your hair;)

Thanks htodd and Elena!

lambservant 8 months ago

That was a fun and funny read. I have never heard the over forty rule, but have hear over 50 or 60. It's really absurd, but I will say, there are still some older women like Kirstie Allie (60) in shorter locks. What's important is that you be you, and not try to be someone else. I am 55 and had very short hair from the time I was about 30 until 53. I love longer hair, and it slims my face down now that I have put on a few pounds.

Bhmiller71 8 months ago

Great Hub, you really had me going. I have natural curly hair, really unruly and it must remain long for me to have any control; the idea of cutting my hair is a far worse idea than me breaking some "hair rule"...I am never gonna look like J-Lo or Christy Brinkley, but my husband LOVES my hair,he thinks I am sexy, and that's enough for me. I say, make your own rules and be the sexy goddess we were all meant to be!

Mrs. Menagerie 8 months ago

I'm glad you enjoyed my hub Lambservant...there has got to be a story behind that name, do tell! ;)

Hi Bhmiller, I always wanted curly hair, so beautiful!

Peanutritious 8 months ago

Excellent! Stereotypes should be challenged. I despise the way that all females over 40 are generalised. We're all different. We all have the right to wear our hair however we like! Mine is long and curly and it's staying put (mind you i'm still 39)!!!

WRITTENBYSHAWN 8 months ago

Thank you for this article. Long, well kept hair at 52 that I do not wish to cut! Glad to know I can break a rule now and again...

cathy 8 months ago

well, that was an interesting take on longer hair over 40. the problem is now, that all women are "supposed" to have long hair or else we're unfeminine. Who made up that rule? I'm 45 now and look better with short hair--and I have no trouble getting male attention.

naturalsolutions 8 months ago

Well i simply smile while reading this hub. Maybe the 40 years old no long hair rules is just a thought. You know what? Because in this age, ordinary woman is probably a great house wife. They have a lot of things to do, so they have no time for their hair, every time a woman looks at the mirror there's a 100% chance that they will look and comb their hair. Making them to waste time in just looking at it. So the women cut their hair in their choice just to avoid time lock. Short hair is very easy to prettify. That is the idea of 40 year old rule.

ivantsoft 8 months ago

women with long hair look gorgeous. It depends on shape of the face and other factors (eyes, lips, forehead etc)

ClaireHaley 8 months ago

LOL this hub made me smile. I have just turned 40! is it now time to get my long locks cut?

Mrs. Menagerie 8 months ago

Hi Peanutritious and written by Shawn, and thanks!

Hi Cathy, just for the record, I have nothing against short hair, I wish it looked good on me but, alas, it does not. :)

Natural solutions, I'm glad you got a smile out of reading this...:)

I totally agree, ivantsoft, it does all depend on your whole look!

Thanks Claire, only cut your hair if you want to and not because of your birthday...and Happy Birthday!

Kathleen Cochran 8 months ago

Great Hub on a topic any woman wrestles with if she is over 40 who has always worn her hair past her shoulders. I don't know why so many gals chop off the locks by mid-30s making themselves look mid-40s immediately. I'll be 60 in another year and I'm too busy to mess with short hair. It takes too much trouble to keep. Great subject!

jfay2011 8 months ago

Hi, I'm 43 and for years have had long hair. I finally got it chopped to shoulder length this summer and love my new hair cut. Yet, I will say that long hair does look great on a lot of people and it shouldn't matter how old you are. But I would think that on someone really older a shorter cut would be nice. Shoulder lenght is a good one. I'm not a fan of really short hair. My mother had shoulder lenght hair up until she got cancer and then it was really short until her death. I would never get my hair cut really short. I like some lenght to it. It's great to be able to put it in a ponytail if you want. You can't do that if its really short. The longer your hair is, the more you can do with it. Although I like it shorter, than it was. It's easier to manage.

battenburg 8 months ago

i just turned 40 and my hair is long enough for me to sit on. Every now and again, I find I feel "fed up" with my hair, and I chop a huge chunk of ..... for it to grow back to it's normal length in a matter of months!! Hair!! who'd have it???!!!!

Tara 7 months ago

I say if you still got it, flaunt it. If you don't, cut it and make it look your age. I mean honestly, if you look old- do the old hair styles (short hair) if that's what you're trying to say. Stop hating on women who still have it and still look younger than they really are, if they look good with long hair then age shouldn't matter. It still doesn't mean you should down an older woman who still rocks it.

susan54 7 months ago

For years I had long hair and then on my 50th birthday I went to the barbershop and had all my hair cut into a FLATTOP and I love it!! It's been over 4 years now and this is all I want to wear so easy to take care of and my husband and kids love it on me also. I work at a law office at the front desk and I get about 7 people a week telling me how good I look. I get it cut into a Military style flattop for the summer months it keeps me cool when I work in the garden in the summertime.

I am so happy to read this and all the ladies on this page look beautiful. Ever since I was a child my hair had been short and permed (in the 50's) and always turned out looking just like one of my aunts or my Mom...this was about 6 years old..even through my teens I wasn't allowed to wear longer hair. After that I wore my hair pretty much long but then was told I was getting "too old" to wear long hair...Well I had decided to wear my hair exactly the way I wanted and it has been shoulder length ever since. After reading all about women letting their hair grow I even feel much better about doing it! I DON"T like short hair on me..looks great on a lot of women but I really hate it on me. I will never wear my hair short. I have some gray coming in and sometimes get my hair highlighted to try to blend it in. I don't worry about aging, there is nothing we can do about it anyway so I'm not trying to look younger...just a nice looking 60 year old. we all try to look our best at the age we are and take care of ourselves the best we can. I just like my hair long..this is now 2011 not 1950 when everyone's hair looked exactly the same!

Nice hub - but I think you've either got it or you haven't - age isn't too much of a leveler, nor is hair length. "Clearly, there is nothing sexy about 42 year old Jennifer Lopez with ultra long hair." - hilarious - I should be so lucky as to spend 5 minutes in the presence of such an 'unsexy' woman.

justinkellina 6 months ago

you had to start this hub, to piss folks off...I bet you are totally ROFL with each comment. you so funny, we get it, we get it.....you don't like long hair. but little girl one day you will. unless you like boy cuts which is cute also. Ms. Butterfly 5 months ago

I so agree with you about the freedom for haircut and style mature women should have. However most of the celebrities are not natural - too much botox and plastic surgery to make them look "gorgeous". Seeing such faces on every cover women just forget how a normal 40 somethings look and that make them feel bad and unpretty. But they still can look gorgeous, although not exactly the same as in their twenties. With long hair or short - whatever they prefer :)

Mrs. Menagerie 5 months ago

Ms. Butterfly--

Thank you and I agree. However, I do know many, many non-celebrity beauties in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who are gorgeous. In fact, my mother-in-law is almost 70 and is one of the most beautiful, stylish and vibrant women I know!

Sayagoya 4 months ago

I DISAGREE. All of the above woman look stunning with their hair LONG. On the contrary to the old belief that older woman should have short hair to give appear younger. Its all about how you maintain, feel, and express. depending on your life style - hair and clothes should match the occassion. These above woman have life styles that not only crave the styles they done but expect it. Why not just ask these stars to give up there careers for old folks activities? Silly right? Right. Now for you women over 40 - if you know you look good, are complimented on your locks, and dress proper to your life style - then don't change that for some supposed rule on what looks better. No offense to anyone - but to me short hair older woman remind me of a lesbian.

What's your problem, lady? It's not your business how anyone else wears their hair, so back off, okay? I'm going to be 53 in two weeks and thank God Almighty I am not so old and "dried in the shell" between the ears as you apparently are. I'm not sure why you and certain others are so offended by someone with long hair, but you can all definitely go straight to a high cliff and jump off as a group. Thanks!

Almost 60 with long curly blonde hair 4 months ago

The reason I'm here in the first place is because my 40 year old son told me I should get my hair cut off because it looked like I was trying to look young. I told him I wore it this way because I like it this way, and he said then will you just do it for me? After reading comments I have decided that there is no way I'm cutting it for anyone but myself, if and when I decide to do that...thanks so much for the article and all of your comments.

I love long hair because it is one of the features that is owned by women and shows me how far a woman will go to be one. The extra work combined by the ability to change it in so many different ways because it is long tells me a lot about a woman. A woman who meets a man for an occasion and has completely changed her style for that night wins me hands down. IN fact she can even put it up and at-least I can put it down later. No woman with short hair can do that. She looks the same every day and puts no effort into her appearance. Like a woman who wants a real man, I like a real woman and the longer her hair is the better.

Love it, love satire. The nerve of these women (myself included) to have long hair past the age of 40!

sandiv2001 4 months ago

Long hair or short hair does not have an age. It is the up keep of whatever you have short or long hair. Taking time to style, color and regular hair cuts for both long and short hair will keep you looking great no matter what your age is.

Ok Ladies

I had the most beautiful long hair, and got caught up in the whole "cut your hair, you have a baby, and your almost 40" well I will say I look good with both short, and long hair but I really miss my long hair!!! I am now growing it out, and going to keep it styled nice!

Don't let anyone brainwash you like was done to me! 40, 50,60 I don't care how old you are. If you keep it styled nice...WHY NOT!!!

You are NUTZO for saying that women over 40 should not have long hair.....thats a bunch of idiotic suggestions. Wonder who made this person God to suggest a dumb thing like that. I am 65 & have long hair - am still working as well.....

I love how so many commenters are angrily protesting your article because they don't understand the meaning of "satire" or "sarcasm"...

it's really funny!

Thx for your page! Youre a fantastic writer! Im 46 & cut my hair short becuz i hav a 3 yr old & no time for me. I feel like a dyke. My husband hates it, & i rarely get sex anymore. I love long hair but thought it inappropriate for a mother & woman my age. I also bought all polos & bermudas. Im growing it out & Wearing the sexy BEBE shirts & jeans i love. Id rather get discerning looks from women & i want u looks from my husband!

Thank you, and keep those stories coming!

Lucy...I know what you mean, isn't it great?!

Do what you want to suit your own comfort and/or fashion needs. Societal qualms (e.g., rules regarding hairstyles [give me a friggin' break]) are just that--qualms. Be comfy in your skin and style regardless if what others think "appropriate."

I'm 34 and my hair is 3" shorter than Princess Jasmine's from "Aladdin" and it isn't going anywhere. And for the people who are against long hair should go take a long walk off a short pier.

It's so true that all of these beauties look stunning in their long tresses but unfortunatly those of us who can not afford face lifts and other expensive "youth enhancing" treatments usually don't look 10 to 15 years younger than we are. There are women who are "older" who do look great in longer hair but they seem few and far between. The women in these photos are the exception rather than the rule which is really just a tease to those of us who would love to have our long hair again but know we can't get away with it anymore. I agree though that people should wear whatever they like and feel comfortable in as long as it looks good no matter what their age but the reality is that most women in their upper 50's who have "natural" faces minus Botox and surgeries can not wear long hair. These women are an inspiration though because they take such great care of themselves and dress beautifully at any age and it's the inner radiance that comes from good health that is attractive on everyone and this usually doesn't cost a fortune.

Living in the south many years ago I heard a young lady make the comment "I can't wait to turn 30 so I can cut all ny hair off". My first reaction was laughter til I realized that she was serious. Her mother was there and explained to me that after 30 it is not 'proper' to have long hair. I was 29 and pregnant with medium length hair. I didn't cut my hair for a number of years because of it. Wear your hair however you like. Good writing. Loved the sarcasm.

I think it just depends on a lot of different thing if women over 40 should have long hair

LetitiaFT 2 months ago

Excellent! I love the way you lead the reader to your conclusion by saying the opposite of what you mean. The comments of those who didn't get are almost as entertaining! I'm clicking "fan."

This is crazy. This article is just another example of how people want to keep women in a bubble. smdh!!

I am 41 with long hair. I live in The south, always have as so my mother. When I was 29, my mother and my hair dresser at the time said when I turned 30 I would need to cut my hair like an older woman....needless to say I found another hairdresser! I plan on keeping mine long as long as possible!

kitty hello 2 months ago

I honestly think women should tailor lenghts that help define and excentuate the face, not use hair to hide behind...and just because you have long hair doesn't mean you're any less feminine then a girl with short hair. Just saying, reading some of these comments about how you wouldn't cut your hair because your boyfriend or husbands likes you with long hair...come on! Do you seriously want a guy who loves you for your hair and not focus on your face?

NOTHING wrong with long hair...but whether you're 85 or 15 if you're gonna have it, keep up with the maintanance. As a hairdresser, I don't preach rules. I love long hair as long as you take care of it and style it. I've had extremely long hair and now have pixie short hair (please stop refering to short hair as "boy cuts" or "lesbian hair") it's just as sexy. I have clients come in and say my hair looks cute but they're too afraid to chop their secreity blanket off. I use hair to sculpt shapes that frame the face perfectly...so if you hate shorter hair because of past experiences you probably had the wrong frame for your face. Short hair is about customization, no two short cuts are the same!

Carol 2 months ago

I have had different hair lengths during my whole life, and when I met my second husband, it was a short bob. It was okay, but that's all. Recently, I was complaining about my hair and he told me he would like me to let it grow at least to shoulder length. Hmmm, I always thought I looked better short, or did I really? Well, I let it grow, longer than shoulder length. Well, I love it, I look better and I can fix it different ways, up, down, old, new whatever. I know how to work with it to make it look shiny and it is healthy. My husband loves it, too. He is 56 and I am 66 and don't look my age either! So, there!!

Frank Pouch 2 months ago

All kidding aside, a lot of older women look younger with shorter cuts...not SO short, that it's "mannish" - I mean, more like MEDIUM cuts, which these days, are considered short.

The reason this is so, is because shorter hair visually PULLS THE FACE UP, plus, shorter hair ususally has more swing and volume and "poofiness" too it,whereas longer hair can fall flat, and look like it's "sticking to he head."

Celebrities...can't really go by them. First of all, they have a slew of people working on them every second...HAIR EXTENSIONS...blurring screens and digital photo-shopping, which make them appear YEARS younger than they are in pics....let's see some average every day forty something women with super long hair...not so hot! Also, there are some celebs who should just cut it a bit..like sara Jessica Parker, because she has such a long face, the long hair visually adds to the length of her face.

So...sorry to disagree! Also, I don't find J. Lo attractive in that pic...her face looks too old and chisled, her hair, too thin and fly away. She looks sort of..."hard". Same with demi Moore..time for a haircut,, you look haggard.

There is nothing wrong with admitting that shorter hair can make a woman look younger, fresher, and cuter - even if she is a younger woman with a longish face, or "too thin" hair. What is with all the extremes lately, at such late ages? Too much botox, too much lip injection, too much hair....

PSSST! 2 months ago

I personally think an older woman (besides a celebrity - and you can't really go by them. Nothing about them is natural, and they do too much photo-shopping) where was I? Oh yea, an older woman can look sort of "witchy" or old hillbilly-like with too long hair. It just doesn't look right with an older face, for some reason. Now a couple of the women you portrayed, such as Mary Steebergen and Elizabeth Hurley don't really have long, long hair that goes way down their back, so they look okay. Their hair is thick, and frames their face well. But that super long hair? I think only really young girls with really thick hair and a cute round face look good with that!

My opinion,I look fantastic with long hair as an older woman.Jlo is a damn sexy beautiful 42 year old woman who can wear what she wants, how she wants and date whom she wants.SHE HAS EARNED IT.Get with the frigging programme. These days are over!

Im a little over weight and 47. I look thinner with longer hair. I'm a natural blonde and when I even mention cutting my hair everyone says no! But I do agree if it's to long you can look witchy.

The idea that women over 40 shouldn't wear her hair long is just pure bunk, imho. I'm older than 40, I've kept my hair long, and I'll continue to keep it long.

Older women with long hair only look "witchy" if they have crypt-keeper wrinkles. Even then, who cares?

As a woman in her early 60's (yup--you all read right--my early 60's!), I still like to wear my extremely naturally curly hair long, and I've continued to do so, despite all the stupid so-called "lets and shoulds" about how women my age, and with my type of hair, to boot, should wear their hair. I've had short hair, hated it with a passion, and couldn't wait for it to grow back, although I waited and prevailed, even when it got to be at that pesky "in-between" stage, when it was too long to be short, and too short to be long. It's long now, as it's been for many, many years, and I like it that way.

I wear my hair in a number of different ways, depending on my mood, and the occasion; one or two braids, down, up in a bun with an octopus clip, for example. I get the ends trimmed off every few months, so they won't be a total mess of dried-out, split ends.

To the people who don't like long curly (or even long rippled hair) hair; too bad for them! It's my hair, and I have to live with it and wear it...they don't!

you're an idiot and 42 is not old dumbass. and what about women in other cultures, ie native american cultures, indigenous cultures where long hair is considered a sign of power. PLEASE. PEOPLE who are misguided, uneducated and betrayers of their own sex should not write fashion blogs. EVER. get over yourself.

GUEST AGAIN. 9 days ago

Wow. I just read your bio. Thank God you didn't stay in journalism, yet you still write. And I see that you live inland. This makes perfect sense as to why you are so behind the times in thought. Try visiting a coastal area sometime, maybe the sea air will clear your muddled mind. I really don't care if you put this up or not, I don't need the entire web to read what I think of your horrible writing. But truly, take it from one writer to the next you need a serious editorial swathe cut through this balderdash. PLEASE don't give up you day job. Leave the writing to the people who are good at it. You are the reason blogs should not be allowed. Writing was once considered a GIFT. You are not gifted. Please stop writing such long winded nonsense. You need to check yourself Don't admit you have a degree in journalism. It's sad. Very disappointing show of craft. Sorry you are a sad example of a writer. A real writer can take it on the chin I hope you seriously will consider what I've written because my critique of this is coming from one who has studied the craft of writing. This is just horrible. I am afraid to read what else you have written, for the fear of it pissing me off. EDIT this SHITE DOWN please. If you must write some horrible rant that is mean spirited at least have the wit to subscribe to some kind of brevity. Sweet Jesus, no one cares about your blog.

Hello GUEST AGAIN,and thank you for your well thought out and shrewd comments. Just for the record, I always "put up" all comments. I believe in allowing people to really express themselves; most people do a fine job of showing the world their own, true colors.

Just FYI, you may enjoy reading the following:

sat·ire/?sa?t?(?)r/

Noun:

The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices.

Had you read to the end, you would have seen where I explain (to those that have not yet caught on) that I am, in fact, being facetious (which means: not meant to be taken seriously, just so you know...)

vespawoolf 9 days ago

Wow, the guest comment is unbelievable. I loved this satirical article on hair lengths for women over 40. Your writing is expressive and concise. Creating controversy is proof of your talent!
